Smart Micro Farms

For 20 years, Robert Henrikson was President of Earthrise, pioneer in spirulina. He founded the first US commercial algae farm Earthrise Farms and marketed Earthrise® Spirulina and superfood products in the USA and 30 countries. Robert’s current enterprise is Smart Microfarms, developing scalable microalgae systems to grow high value algae food products that are local, sustainable and profitable. Smart Microfarms currently operates a commercial spirulina microfarm in Half Moon Bay. They have operated a research station in Richmond, CA since 2012, and a spirulina microfarm testbed near Olympia WA since 2013-15.

Smart Microfarms produces a low-temperature dehydrated spirulina powder and sells it in various forms including mild tasting crunchies. Many customers prefer their SpiruSource fresh frozen spirulina to traditional dried spirulina. Fresh frozen has almost no taste, and can be mixed with drinks and foods without changing the flavor – appealing to fresh food and raw food consumers. Smart Microfarms is growing a hydroponic crop, using water, not soil. The spirulina is produced in a controlled environment greenhouse, using no pesticides, no herbicides, no fungicides, no toxins of any kind. Their water source is Half Moon Bay city water, carbon filtered on site. In 2017 Smart Microfarms began to sell in farmers markets in Santa Cruz, Marin and Berkeley.
