Local Farmer and co-owner of New Native Farms, Ken Kimes, was recently involved in a serious farm accident which resulted in the permanent loss of his lower right arm and severe damage to his left hand. Ken was air-lifted to a San Jose trauma center where he spent a week in the hospital. Ken is back at home on the farm now and is in good spirits. A medical fund has been established at Santa Cruz Community Credit Union for anyone that would like to donate for his medical expenses.

Ken Kimes and his wife, Sandra Ward have been organic farmers for over 25 years. Together they founded New Natives, a sprout and wheatgrass farm in Corralitos, California in 1983. In addition to managing their farm full time, they both have been very involved in the local sustainable agriculture movement. They are longtime members of California Certified Organic Farmers and helped establish the downtown Santa Cruz farmers’ market in 1990. Ken also serves on the board of Community Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF) and is an advisor to the Land Trust of Santa Cruz County.

More about Ken’s involvement with Santa Cruz’s local agricultural movement can be viewed at the UCSC regional history project website: http://library.ucsc.edu/reg-hist/cultiv/kimes-ward.

For those of you that would like to donate, please write checks to the Ken Kimes Medical Fund and either mail them to SCCFM(P.O. Box 8189, Santa Cruz, CA 95061) or deposit them directly at Santa Cruz Community Credit Union. The account # is 44613.

New arrivals:

*Oso Velloso Farm (padrone peppers and beans)

*Casalegno Family Farm (beans,peas,garlic,onions,grapes,cucumbers,basil,dill)

*Bill the Bulb Barron (narcissus flowers)

* Claravale Milk was scheduled to enter the market July 14th, they have since rescheduled due to some unexpected developments. Not to worry, they plan on returning once they get their market operation lined up. We will keep you posted here and on our Facebook page. To learn more about their operation please visit their website: http://claravaledairy.com/

*Serendipity Farm starts the downtown market on July 14th. They will be selling next to Cole Canyon on the third row. Please stop by and meet one of our newest farms.

*TLC Ranch and Morris Ranch will be returning to the Santa Cruz market, July 21tst(previously reported as July 28th) with their delicious pasture raised eggs, pork, lamb and beef (Morris Ranch).

Market News:

In response to Santa Cruz’s growing needs the Santa Cruz Community Farmers’ Market is pleased to announce plans to expand its Downtown Market.

The market now has expanded to include the entire parking lot. The additional space now allows the market more room for live music, expanded valet bike parking, arts and crafts, cooking demonstrations, information space for non-profit organizations and expanded restroom facilities.

The Market currently occupies the space behind the Toadal Fitness building on the corner of Lincoln and Cedar Streets and will grow to include the space behind the University Town Center, up to Cathcart Street.

One of our new services is our “veggie valet” program which is a free service for customers of the market. We have a spot in the market that has street/car access where anyone can check in their shopping bags, continue shopping or go retrieve their vehicle and pull up and get their food. This new service makes it easier to drive into downtown and shop at the farmers’ market. The service will be operational April 28th. The 20th Anniversary event will not allow people to drive into the Veggie Valet driveway…however, we will still offer the service road side. Stop by the booth and see how it all works!

Of the five markets in the SCCFM family – which include the Westside, Live Oak, Scotts Valley and Felton Markets – the Downtown Market is the oldest sibling, having been born as Santa Cruz was recovering from the 1989 earthquake. Then, as now, the community has roundly evinced its ongoing support of the SCCFM’s mission and its promotion of local business.

The market represents the best in local organic produce, nuts, dried fruit, honey, dates, nursery starts, potted plants, avocados, central valley fruit, central coast organic strawberries, organic fresh cut flowers, pasture raised meats and eggs, artisan food vendors, cook-to-order cuisine, specialty bakeries, coffee vendors, artisan tofu and soy producers, amazing sorbets, raw-vegan foods and more. A cornucopia of stimulus…..the Santa Cruz market is an experience not to miss!

**********************************************************************************

The Santa Cruz Farmers Market operates year-round every Wednesday from 2:30pm to 6:30pm, rain or shine. The market has been in operation for almost twenty years and is located in downtown Santa Cruz in the public parking lot at the corner of Cedar & Lincoln St. (Directions) .
