News from the front line (6/09):
Garden Variety Cheese Co. is our newest member of the downtown market and is owned and operated by local cheese maker and chef, Rebecca King. They can be found on the back wall of the first row, next to Twin Girl Farm. Rebecca operates a 40 acre farm in Watsonville, where she has started an artisan cheese making business. She starts with milking her sheep to produce 12 to 14 gallons of milk per day which then is refrigerated. Every two or three days she makes a batch of cheese. Wheels of sheep cheese then age for at least two to three months to develop a nutty, sweet flavor. She is focusing on producing a hard, aged, Basque-style cheese plus a feta variety. Garden Variety Cheese can only be found at the Santa Cruz and Westside markets. Rebecca has a blog you can follow: http://www.ardigasna.blogspot.com/
S.C.R.E.A.M is an exciting new vendor on the third row at the Santa Cruz market specializing in producing sorbets with only fresh seasonal fruits and produce from the farmers market. They do this through a unique culinary process which results in a super rich..dense product without the use of dairy. To learn more please visit their website.http://screamsorbet.com/
