Local Farmer and co-owner of New Native Farms, Ken Kimes, was recently involved in a serious farm accident which resulted in the permanent loss of his lower right arm and severe damage to his left hand. Ken was air-lifted to a San Jose trauma center where he spent a week in the hospital. Ken is back at home on the farm now and is in good spirits. A medical fund has been established at Santa Cruz Community Credit Union for anyone that would like to donate for his medical expenses.

Ken Kimes and his wife, Sandra Ward have been organic farmers for over 25 years. Together they founded New Natives, a sprout and wheatgrass farm in Corralitos, California in 1983. In addition to managing their farm full time, they both have been very involved in the local sustainable agriculture movement. They are longtime members of California Certified Organic Farmers and helped establish the downtown Santa Cruz farmers’ market in 1990. Ken also serves on the board of Community Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF) and is an advisor to the Land Trust of Santa Cruz County.

More about Ken’s involvement with Santa Cruz’s local agricultural movement can be viewed at the UCSC regional history project website:  http://library.ucsc.edu/reg-hist/cultiv/kimes-ward.

For those of you that would like to donate, please write checks to the Ken Kimes Medical Fund and either mail them to SCCFM(P.O. Box 8189, Santa Cruz, CA 95061) or deposit them directly at Santa Cruz Community Credit Union. The account # is 44613.

A benefit concert is being planned for the beginning of October. We will post details soon.
